Sizing up another iPhone competitor

Samsung’s slick new smartphone, the F700 comes on the heels of Apple’s extremely successful iPhone, which has phenomenally set the trend for the next generation of handsets.
Although new smartphones have already come out bearing many of iPhone’s design features, the F700 has emerged as its closest rival. So close that from a distance, it can even be mistaken as the real mckoy.

Looks Can Be Deceiving
But sadly, the F700 is not as powerful as the iPhone. First, the F700’s touch-screen interface is unresponsive and unreliable. The screen may be large and as tall as the iPhone’s but it’s not as wide and the resolution is significantly lower.

On top of the screen are four icons: one for the menu, the other for the keypad, another for call records and one more that indicates whether the ringer is on or off. When the screen is on standby, one may press the physical button just under it to wake it up. At the center of the touch-screen is a mechanical key or shortcut button that leads to the messaging, internet functions, music player, the keypad and menu. However, this touch-screen feature is not particularly sensitive and requires a great deal of patience just to use it successfully.

Comfortable, Slide-Out Keypad
One good thing about it is when you’re already frustrated using the touch-screen, you can always slide out the keyboard and things would improve automatically. This additional slide-out keypad feature makes the F700 chunkier in size but it sure turns out to be a very handy and useful function this phone can’t do without. It proves to be among its best features that is a no-match to the iPhone.

The iPhone’s small virtual keypad is not ideal for typing messages and emails because you can only do so in portrait format which is physically frustrating. But with the F700’s small but exceptionally comfortable Qwerty keypad you can type lengthy messages and emails in landscape format.

Speedy Downloads
What sets this 3G handset apart from its competitor is its HSDPA connection that allows faster downloading of data and music over the air, even faster than iPhone’s EDGE connection. With an impressive sound quality and MusicStation (which enables downloading of tracks on demand and creating playlists), you can really look forward to a truly pleasurable listening experience every time. However, if you stop paying the subscription, you won’t be able to keep any of the music you have downloaded.

Moreover, the F700 allows you to take pictures and send them via MMS; shoot videos using the camera; and make 3G video calls with the VGA camera on the front. Another asset is its built-in Google Maps software which makes for easy downloading of Google Maps and even YouTube videos. This Vodafone handset also has a Mobile TV function that gives access to various Sky and BBC channels.
However, one big disappointment in the F700 is its lack of Wi-Fi.
At the back of the F700 is an excellent three-megapixel camera with auto-focus, and a handy bright LED light. The camera, though, has no protective cover so for meticulous users, make sure your phone is placed in a pouch to avoid scratches.
Battery life for the F700 usually lasts for a day and a half but may be less with the constant use of the HSDPA connection.
